WHAT IS THE THREE FOURTEEN INSTITUTE?
Three Fourteen is a church-based seminary program, designed to combine the strengths of both local church and theological seminary. Three Fourteen students commit to two-year residency in St. Louis in which they 1) receive personal mentorship from professors and pastors, 2) commit to a “Rule of Life” in the context of a small cohort, and 3) earn a graduate degree in theological studies. We train leaders to multiply Christ-centered disciples and churches.
WHERE DOES THE NAME “THREE FOURTEEN” COME FROM?
Three Fourteen takes inspiration from Mark 3:14, where Jesus calls disciples to be with him and trains them to proclaim good news and to cast out Satan. (The area code for St. Louis is “314,” which is also pretty cool.)
IS THREE FOURTEEN ACCREDITED?
Yes. Three Fourteen partners with Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, serving as Midwestern’s extension site in St. Louis. Under the auspices of Midwestern, all classes are taught by credentialled instructors and are fully accredited.
HOW MUCH DOES THREE FOURTEEN COST?
Through Three Fourteen’s partnership with Midwestern Seminary, students take accredited coursework for only $250/credit hour, plus some additional fees. MBTS offers standard financial aid and scholarship opportunities which can be pursued by the individual student through MBTS. For full-time residents of the program, some leadership development exercises (e.g., retreats, conferences) may include additional costs and/or fees not covered by Three Fourteen, though we strive to keep these costs affordable.
WHERE AND WHEN DO CLASSES TAKE PLACE?
Classes take place at The Journey Tower Grove, 4800 Reber Place, St. Louis, Mo 63139. Classes run on a 16-week semester (Fall and Spring). Currently, we offer two class times on Mondays (1:00-4:00pm and 6:00-9:00pm) and one class on Thursdays (8:30-11:30am). In addition, shorter classes of varying duration are offered in-person and online at several intervals throughout the year.
WHAT IS THE PROCESS FOR APPLICATION?
Three Fourteen applicants must complete the 3:14 Application online at http:// threefourteen.org/apply/ as well as the Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary application online at www.mbts.edu/apply. Within the MBTS application, please be sure to select the
St. Louis extension as your campus location and mark that you will be applying to the Three Fourteen Institute’s MTS (Masters of Theological Studies) program, unless you’ve personally discussed other arrangements with a member of the Three Fourteen staff. Once you have completed both applications, your information will be reviewed and you may be asked to participate in both a phone and an in-person interview with a member of the Three Fourteen staff.
IF I AM ALREADY A STUDENT AT MIDWESTERN, HOW DO I SIGN UP FOR CLASSES?
Current students may register in the student portal: https://portal.mbts.edu/student/login.asp
WHAT CREDENTIALS WILL A THREE FOURTEEN STUDENT EARN?
Students who complete our program will possess two formal credentials: a seminary degree and an institutional certificate. The seminary degree, a Masters in Theological Studies, will come from our partner, Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Three Fourteen will also award a graduate certificate certifying that not only graduate-level academic goals were achieved, but that field-tested ministry and personal character qualifications befitting a proven ministry leader were exhibited.
WHERE WILL MY CHURCH MINISTRY HOURS TAKE PLACE?
The church ministry hours of the residency program can be completed at any of The Journey’s five St. Louis locations or at one of our other partnered churches in the St. Louis area. Residency placement is at the discretion of the Three Fourteen staff and selection committee and is based on the best interest of each resident and host church.
WHAT IS THREE FOURTEEN’S RELATIONSHIP TO THE JOURNEY?
Three Fourteen is ministry of The Journey. Darrin Patrick, founding pastor of The Journey, and Slade Johnson, then pastor of Hanley Road Baptist Church, dreamt for years about what it would look like for the local church to raise up seminary-educated pastors who were embedded in church ministry. This sparked the flame for what is now Three Fourteen Institute. The Journey generously resources and provides facilities for Three Fourteen.
